In these strange pockets there are stories of a lifetime.

Andy really was a pocket kind of guy – that’s why when his mother made him a special pair of beige pants with extra large square pockets he thought it was the best gift he had ever received. Lots of pockets, on the knees, at the waist and even on the side of the thigh, and very large, about eight inches square, could hold just about anything a 9-year-old boy could ever want to carry. And he filled them sometimes! At Johnny’s birthday party, other children gave him angry looks because he seemed to have an unfair advantage for collecting piñata candy. One Summer afternoon he filled his pockets with soil and wild daisies just to see if he could be a walking garden. (It lasted until he went inside the house for dinner and his mother made him leave the dirt and flowers outside.)

His mother was smart when she made his clothes – she always made parts detachable or re-useable. Their small family didn’t have too much money after moving from the city, so what was pants one year might be part of a patchwork quilt as soon as he outgrew them. She figured out how important those pockets were, and took them off and sewed them onto a new pair of pants when he outgrew the first pair. She had to reinforce the insides of the pockets with some plaid scraps leftover from father’s old flannel shirt, but on the outside they were still the same worn, beige pockets.

Mother missed city life. Every morning she would wake up and look out the window – when father asked why, she said it was too quiet. While tending the vegetable garden she would often hum a tune that reminded Andy of the cars passing by outside their old city apartment window. Nothing about her humming reminded him of the sirens of emergency vehicles that would sometimes pass by. You only remember the things you really like sometimes.

At school he kept pens and pencils and markers in his pockets sometimes. When he got older he kept other things which he probably shouldn’t have had in there. After an incident at school, his father tried to start searching his pockets to make sure he wasn’t keeping anything in there that he shouldn’t be. That didn’t last too long because it took his father (a very thorough person) about 20 minutes to go through all the items in Andy’s pockets, and he was a busy man and didn’t want to take the time. Drinking his afternoon coffee in the old green armchair was a far more pleasing use of the time.

When Andy was 14, his mother fell ill. Sometimes she didn’t seem sick, but just very sad. The doctor could find nothing wrong with her, so Andy did everything he could think of to try and cheer her up. They sat together and talked, they made bread and cookies together, and one day Andy went out and picked so many wildflowers that they filled up his pockets and he brought them back into the house.

“Remember when I tried to be a walking garden with the dirt and the daisies?” He said. Of course she remembered – it took a lot of washing to get those pockets clean again. “Well, I guess now I’m just a walking bouquet.” Her lips parted a little as she tried to smile at how ridiculous it all was. Andy’s father returned from work while the flowers were still in Andy’s pockets. He laughed nervously and then together they placed the wildflowers all over the house, in cups and champagne flutes when they ran out of glass vases.

Andy’s mother died that evening, sleeping, and Andy’s father cried all night at her bedside. Andy spent the night tending to the wildflowers, ripped from their backyard and placed in cups and vases all over the house.

My [subject-here] Blog

Unless you’re quite a prolific writer on one specific topic, blogging doesn’t quite seem like the right tool. In my case, this blog serves as a chronology of things I like to write about in order, it’s never focused on one specific thing. Maybe I’m missing the point here, but I think that personal blogs are just as relevant to our culture if not more so than blogs about a specific topic by one person or by a group of people. So it’s a blog of all subjects, that ultimately all add up to be about you.

So this blog is about me.

That’s why it’s my WordPress blog. Soon I’ll be using this blog as a way to post some stories hopefully. With a nice interface that will sort of count my words for me, and a place to post that will show all my work neatly in order, I think WordPress is the best place for it, even if it’s not ready to be read in any professional way yet.

So yeah, stuff I’ll look back on and regret posting and make private later. :)

Letterpress and typography

Back from the WordPress hiatus!

I’m thrilled to be part of a letterpress class this summer – I have really enjoyed learning about how to use the presses and I’ve had the tactile satisfaction of making letterpressed items. I’m coming across all sorts of interesting typography and letterpress resources because of this class – here are a few I’ve run into recently:

The Ladies of Letterpress is a fun Flickr group that showcases the work of women who create with letterpress. Inspiring work!

Beast Pieces is the portfolio site of Studio on Fire – cool stuff they make!

I’m using my netvibes page as a collection of typography blogs, links and resources right now – I can’t keep up with all the stuff that’s happening in the field because there’s just so much of it online! But here I (and anyone else that finds my little netvibes ‘universe’) can look at a glance at some online resources brought together in one place to pick out something interesting to read: http://www.netvibes.com/liquid06#blogs

So, today I got one of the strangest spam messages I have ever received. It didn’t get filtered by Gmail’s awesome spam filter. The title didn’t include any special characters, there were no images in it or ads for viagra. From a sender I don’t know to an e-mail address list I don’t recognize…

Entitled “Yes…Many suffer now,” here is the message from Rubin Temple (lvros@killer.kkk.sg)

Dear MAN
Yes, you’ve got spam mail!
Sorry for this kind of trouble, but it’s the only way to inform all civilization about the real situation in global economy.
Millions of people had lost their job!!!
Millions of people have no even constant home and profits!!!
It is global problem of humanity! And each of us should understand that for solving this trouble one needs to insert the brain and begin to act!
If you are reading these words – it is really matter for you what could happen to you, to your children and friends.
Let me tell you about ways of solving financial crisis problems:
First way – just listen and believe in endless promises of help from your government.
Second way – wait for financial crisis ending (may be tomorrow or in a few couple of years). I don’t know, I am not foreteller.
Third way – get knowledge and information about real situation in global financial market and use it for elimination of mistakes.
I can’t tell you more right now ‘cause I’m an ordinary manager in advertising and my responsibility is reporting to you that it is really necessary to fight against the crisis! ONE CANNOT DO NOTHING ABOUT IT!
Write me and I’ll give you contacts of people who are not slipping right now and trying to change this world in better way.
My personal e-mail: mr.fersinks@googlemail.com
Mary Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Best regards
MAN

I have to wonder about this message. If it was from one of the usual advertising lists, Gmail would have blocked it, right? Did somebody actually hijack a spammer’s e-mail database to send this message they felt was so important? And what of the misspellings? They don’t serve their usual purpose of advertising viagra or some such spammy attempt. The thing I find most interesting, though is the similar salutation and closing. MAN. Addressed to another human being. I am no doubt one of thousands who received this message. I think this is the number one most odd spam message I have ever received.
